Prewar Lionel No. 248 Electric Locomotive
c. 1927-1932; The Lionel Corporation - New York, NY
Pressed-steel O-gauge electric locomotive in bright orange enamel with brass trim and die-cast wheels. Features include dual sliding doors, ventilator slots, brass headlights, and original Lionel plates numbered "248" on each side.
Produced by The Lionel Corporation, the legendary American model train manufacturer founded in 1900, the 248 was introduced as an affordable electric outline engine designed for entry-level sets. Unlike larger Lionel locomotives, the 248 had no reverse unit and operated only in forward motion, but its vibrant paint schemes and sturdy construction made it a mainstay of the late 1920s-early 1930s product line. Surviving examples are sought after today for their display appeal and role in Lionel's formative years.
Condition shows scattered paint loss, surface wear, and oxidation to metal parts consistent with age and handling. Couplers intact, wheels turn freely, and overall structural integrity remains strong.
